What is an urban ecological corridor?
Sometimes, due to lack of time, we cannot go to the forests, but enjoying the company of trees, on the way to work or school or returning home after a long day, is much more pleasant and even recharges our energy. The cooling effect they achieve is mainly due to transpiration, a process by which water inside the tree is released as water vapour through its leaves. Is an ecological corridor the same as a biological one?
Ecological corridors can also be called conservation or biological corridors , but it should be noted that if they are not specified as urban, it is because these corridors are not located in cities, although their function is the same: to unite natural areas . Likewise, their objective is to preserve biodiversity, maintain the structure and function of ecosystems and promote ideal conditions for the habitat of wild flora and fauna.
To further clarify the differences, and outside of urban areas, the World Wildlife Fund distinguishes between ecological corridors , which are 1 to 5 kilometres wide , and conservation corridors, which are less than 1 kilometre wide. The latter are established to link natural areas whose ecosystems are seriously threatened.
