Why is there more and more talk about nearly zero-energy buildings? Nearly zero-energy buildings are more than just a construction trend; they are a firm commitment to energy sustainability in a sector that represents a high level of energy consumption. In Europe, energy consumption in buildings represents 40% of total energy consumption, and 75% of this energy is produced from fossil fuels, so we are in a sector, the residential sector, in which it is urgent to take energy efficiency measures that reduce energy consumption and the number of emissions they generate.

What characteristics should a nearly zero-energy building have?



A nearly zero-energy building is one that has a very low energy demand and achieves high energy efficiency with little or no energy consumption. And how does it achieve this? nZEB or ECCN REGULATIONS (Nearly Zero Energy Building)



According to Directive 2010/31/EU on the energy performance of buildings, a nearly zero-energy building is understood to be one with very low energy demand, a very high level of energy efficiency, and the energy required (nearly zero or very low) must be covered, to a very large extent, by energy from renewable sources, produced “on-site or in the surroundings”.



This directive affects all newly constructed buildings (public and private) with a building permit as of June 27, 2020. Newly constructed buildings must be nZEB (nearly Zero Energy Building). The application of the European directive represents a paradigm shift when it comes to building buildings, where the constructive aspects of the building, the use of efficient systems and the integration of renewable energies take on greater importance, since the use of these systems significantly reduces energy consumption in buildings and greenhouse gas emissions.

The construction sector will undergo major changes over the next decade, and not only because of the introduction of NZEBs. Greater energy efficiency in buildings requires smart systems that can measure, regulate and automate energy consumption. Users will be digitally connected to their homes. Smart climate control systems (and connected to the Internet via WiFi) will enable them to better manage their energy demand.

The European Commission is implementing a series of strategies aimed at reducing energy consumption in this sector, a priority to reduce the number of emissions in accordance with the 20/20/20 objectives and the commitments made in the Paris agreement to curb the effects of climate change.



The ErP Directive on Ecodesign and energy labelling, the European climate control strategy or the recommendations of the European Commission (2016/1318 of the Commission, of July 29, 2016), with the guidelines to promote buildings with almost zero energy consumption are an example of the measures implemented to achieve greater energy efficiency and reduction of emissions at a global level.



Buildings, through heating, hot water, air conditioning, lighting, etc. systems, consume a large amount of energy.
