How to view the message header - Mailfence

In this article, we will explain how to read and understand the “email header” that comes with each and every email message. It contains information about the sender, the route it took, and the recipient. Use this information to avoid spam emails, or recognize when someone is trying to scam you or plant malware on you via email.

How to access the email header

Most email clients allow access to the header. The following list contains some of the most popular email and webmail clients. Please consult your email client's manual if it is not listed here.
To view the email header in Google Mail Webmail (Gmail):
Log in to your account via the web interface and open the message (by clicking on it). Click the “down arrow” at the top right of the message, and select “View original.”
To view the email header in Yahoo Mail Webmail:
Log in to your account via the web interface and open the message (by clicking on it). Click on “Actions” and select “View full header”.
To view the email header in Hotmail Webmail:
Log in to your account via the web interface and go to the message list. Right-click on the message and select “View message source.”
To view internet headers in MS Outlook:
Open the message in MS Outlook. Now go to “View” and select “Message Options” or follow the path “File -> Info -> Properties”. Check the “Internet Headers” section.
To view the email header in Thunderbird:
Open the message, then click “View” and select “Message Source.”
To view the email header in MS Windows Mail (and MS Outlook Express):
Select the message in the list, right-click on it and select “Properties,” then go to “Details.”
