Goodbye to passwords, discover the new alternatives

Post by chandon4 »

World Password Day was celebrated on May 5th . Three of the largest technology companies, Google, Apple and Microsoft, chose that day to announce that they intend to do away with passwords in the future . Their proposal to say goodbye to passwords is based on the use and support of the FIDO passwordless login standards across all of their platforms.

The problem of passwords
Over time, passwords have become more of a headache than a solution. This is not only due to the effort it takes for the user to have to remember all the alphanumeric combinations they have been forced to create to access multiple accounts, but also because, according to the FIDO Alliance , passwords account for 80% of security breaches that occur worldwide bulk sms ukraine due to threats such as phishing or scams. One of the biggest problems arises because 51% of the passwords chosen by the average user are often repeated due to the difficulty of creating and remembering new combinations. Another common mistake is using basic or predictable patterns, such as a succession of letters on the keyboard, for example, “asdfg”, or a numeric combination as basic as “123456”. These situations are disastrous for the user in the event of an attack. Although two-step verification was once touted as a more secure way, it requires multiple devices or different accounts to log in and is no longer foolproof.

The FIDO consortium was formed in 2013 to eliminate all passwords on websites, devices and applications. FIDO stands for Fast Identity Online and was formed as an alliance of technology companies, government agencies, financial institutions, healthcare and other industries. In addition to the three companies mentioned above, Google, Microsoft and Apple, other companies such as Amazon, American Express, Facebook, Mastercard, PayPal and VISA are also part of this association, among its more than 250 members.

What new features does the new agreement bring?
In the statement issued by FIDO on May 5 announcing the agreement with Google, Microsoft and Apple, the alliance outlined two new ways to make passwordless logins more secure:

Allow users to automatically log into their credentials on their devices without having to re-sign in to each account .
Users can use FIDO authentication on their mobile device to log into a website or application regardless of the operating system or browser used . Google will use it on ChromeOS, Android and Chrome, while Apple and Microsoft will do the same for their operating systems and devices.
